It’s no big deal that people are creating crap music. There’s nothing new about bad music. The big deal to me is that so many people actually think this is good music. Why is that? Why are people just so incredibly clueless about what constitutes quality?

American Idol is the easy to blame culprit. And I’m sure that does have a part to play. It’s taught people that the only thing that matters in music is having a pretty voice. This means these are people who have no way of understanding music with any depth or any real artistic value.

But really it must go much deeper than that. Of course it’s not like people being into awful music is a new thing. The masses are always attracted to the easy to swallow garbage that usually fills the top forty every week. And it’s the real music that real music lovers listen to and that lasts for years.

Obviously there will be no one listening to anyone from American Idol or Dierks Bentley in 20 years (except out of pure nostalgia or as a joke) while people will still be listening the music of true musical geniuses like Ween & The Rolling Stones.

So to begin with, you need to start small then go bigger as you get better. So we are going to be playing the F major 7^th chord which is nothing to be scared off it just a chord like any other but it does make you stretch. So if you don’t know how to play an F major 7^th chord that’s ok I will tell you where your fingers go.

You need to place your third finger on the fourth string third fret, your second finger on the third string second fret and your first finger on the second string first fret. Also need an open string under that. now that you have your fingers on the strings you where told to you might feel awkward don’t worry this is normal for beginners it’s because it has the largest strech for your fingers. The closer you come towards you or up the frets the smaller the distance between each fret becomes. So keep the same f major 7 and slide it down the guitar and find a fret that feels the best and hold this position until you feel comfortable. Don’t go too far down the frets it will become too difficult because the frets become to closer and this will make it hard also. once you have the position best for you hold it until it feel good then move down the frets of the guitat until you get to the first fret where we began. Once you have mastered the F major 7 you will be able to apply the same technique and skill to any chord and learn it without feeling overwhelmed.
